Pop Up Parks

Urban air pollution is a public health crisis in Scotland, killing over 2,500 people every year. This June, let’s reclaim parking spaces to celebrate our urban space and paint a vision for a future beyond the private car.

Air pollution affects everyone. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Perth as well as other towns all have illegal levels of air pollution.

Traffic is the key culprit. Cars take up way too much space in our urban areas. They cause pollution, congestion, and can make us feel unsafe to walk or cycle in some areas, creating  social stagnation.

In the days around Clean Air Day this June, we are making a bold and loud challenge to the dominance of the private car in our cities and towns. We want as many people as possible to reimagine and reclaim the streets by turning parking spaces into Pop-Up Parks.

Together we can showcase how brilliant, healthy and inspiring our urban realms could look if we had car-free city centres. They could be changed if we took spaces away from vehicles for cycle lanes, pavements, and public space.

Join us on George Street, where we’ll be taking over 20 suspended parking spaces between Castle Street and Frederick Street to create our very own pop-up park. Bring props if you can (cushions, plants, tea cups), or just yourself for a day of fun in the sun.
